NGOROGORO ACCOMMODATION
Accommodations in Ngorongoro: Where to Stay
By Yulle Adventure
Most people spend one or two nights near the Ngorongoro Crater, and where you sleep affects your views, your budget and how early you can reach the crater floor. The main choices are lodges on the crater rim, camps in the highlands of the conservation area, and hotels in Karatu town, about an hour away.
The three main options
| OptionWhereWhy choose it | ||
| Crater rim lodges | On the rim of the crater, around 2,300 m | Views over the crater, short drive to the descent road, but cold at night |
| Highland camps and lodges | Elsewhere in the conservation area | Smaller, quieter, often luxury, with Maasai culture and walking nearby |
| Karatu hotels and farms | Outside the conservation area, about an hour from the crater gate | Lower prices, warmer weather, farm-style stays and good for early starts with a driver |
Crater rim lodges
Staying on the rim gives you views that many travelers never forget, especially at sunrise when the crater fills with cloud. The lodges are well placed for an early descent, so you can be on the crater floor soon after the gates open. Rooms are comfortable and often have fireplaces or heaters, because the rim is cold at night.
Well-known rim lodges include Ngorongoro Serena Safari Lodge, Ngorongoro Sopa Lodge, Ngorongoro Wildlife Lodge and, at the top end, Ngorongoro Crater Lodge. Prices range from mid-range to very high. Check availability and current rates with us before you commit.
Highland camps in the conservation area
Smaller camps in the surrounding highlands offer privacy and a different feel, with views over the plains and often a cultural element with the local Maasai community. They usually cost more, and some are far enough from the crater that you need to allow extra driving time.
Karatu: value and comfort
Karatu is a farming town on the road to the crater. Lodges here, such as coffee-farm style stays, offer lower prices and a warmer climate. The trade-off is the drive: allow about an hour each way to the crater gate, so you start your day earlier. Karatu suits families, budget travelers and anyone who wants a gentler first or last night.
How to choose
- Best views: a crater rim lodge, with a room facing the crater.
- Best value: a Karatu lodge, paired with an early start.
- Most exclusive: a highland camp or the top rim lodge.
- Traveling with children: Karatu farms and some rim lodges are family-friendly. Ask about age rules.
- Photographers: the rim for sunrise, then the earliest descent possible.
What to expect on the rim
Because of the altitude, temperatures can fall close to freezing on cold nights. Bring warm clothing even if you are traveling in the dry season, and ask whether your room has heating.
How many nights
One night on the rim is enough for most itineraries, giving you the crater visit and a sunrise. Add a second night if you want a rest day or time to explore the highlands. Most northern circuits combine the crater with Tarangire, Lake Manyara and the Serengeti. See our guide to the best time to visit Ngorongoro Crater.
Booking tips
- Book rim lodges early for July to October and December to February.
- Ask for a crater-view room and confirm it in writing.
- Check whether crater fees are included in your package.
- Plan your descent time with your guide the evening before.
