Mid Range Lodges And Camps In Tsavo West
Where to Stay in Tsavo West: A Guide to the Best Mid-Range Lodges and Camps
Tsavo West is one of Kenya's most dramatic safari landscapes. Volcanic hills, the crystal-clear pools of Mzima Springs, the black Shetani lava flow and big views of Kilimanjaro all sit in one park. The accommodation is a mix of ultra-luxury camps and basic budget bandas, but the middle tier is where most travellers find the best balance of comfort, location and price. Here are the main options:
Kilaguni Serena Safari Lodge: the classic waterhole lodge
Kilaguni was the first lodge ever built in a Kenyan national park, set in the lee of Mount Kilimanjaro beside a busy waterhole. It has 56 rooms, including 5 suites, each with a balcony overlooking the waterhole, and its restaurant looks out toward Kilimanjaro.
The main draw is that wildlife comes to you. Elephants, buffalo and plains game visit the waterhole through the day, so you can watch from the terrace between game drives. The lodge also offers a curio shop, spa treatments and medical back-up, which suits families and first-time safari-goers. Travel sites typically list it at the upper end of the mid-range, and a sample search showed about $333 a night with breakfast and a pool. Prices change by season, so check before you book.
Severin Safari Camp: tented comfort with a pool
Severin is the choice if you want a tented camp feel without giving up creature comforts. Lonely Planet describes it as a complex of spacious thatched luxury tents with a swimming pool, a spa and a tented restaurant. It lies in the Kitani area, roughly 11 km from Mzima Springs and 17 km from Chyulu Gate, which makes it a convenient base for the park's best-known attractions.
It is generally priced higher than Ngulia and sits at the top of the mid-range, so it can feel more like an upscale option than a bargain.
Kitani Bandas: good value from the same team
Kitani Bandas is run by the people behind Severin and sits about 2 km past it. Its thatched concrete bandas are described as equally good value. If Severin stretches your budget, this is a way to get the same area and management at a lower price. You trade some of the tented glamour for simpler rooms, but the location is the same.
Ngulia Safari Lodge: the budget-friendly rhino lookout
Ngulia, built in 1969, is one of Tsavo West's oldest lodges and overlooks the Ngulia Rhino Sanctuary. It is described as one of the park's more reasonably priced options, with excellent views and a waterhole next to the restaurant. Birders in particular like it, as the sanctuary and escarpment setting attract plenty of species. Booking sites list it as a 3-star lodge, with an outdoor pool and a spa. It is the best pick for travellers who want to stay inside the park without paying top mid-range rates.
Voyager Ziwani and the southern edge
Voyager Ziwani lies just outside the park's southern boundary and offers safari tents, making it a good base for the quieter southern end of Tsavo West and Lake Jipe, where far fewer visitors go. It suits travellers who want a more remote feel and don't mind longer drives to the main attractions.
How to choose
- Families and first-timers: Kilaguni Serena, for the waterhole and the full range of services.
- Couples who want a tented camp feel: Severin Safari Camp.
- Best value: Ngulia Safari Lodge or Kitani Bandas.
- Quiet and off the beaten track: Voyager Ziwani.
Most Tsavo West lodges offer full-board packages that include game drives, which often works out cheaper than paying for meals and activities separately. The dry months of June to October and January to February give the best game viewing, and they are also the busiest, so book early. Always confirm current rates directly with the lodge or a trusted agent, as the prices shown on booking sites vary widely and change often.
Tsavo West rewards slow travel. Whichever lodge you pick, give yourself at least two or three nights to cover Mzima Springs, the lava flows and the rhino sanctuary without rushing.
