HOT AIR BALLOON SAFARI IN KENYA
Hot Air Balloon Safari in the Masai Mara
By Yulle Adventure
A sunrise balloon flight over the Masai Mara is one of Kenya's most celebrated experiences. You drift above the plains in near silence, watching herds, rivers and sometimes lions from the air, then land to a champagne breakfast in the bush. This guide explains how it works, what it costs and how to get the best out of it.
How a Mara balloon safari works
You are collected from your camp or lodge in the dark, usually between about 4:30 and 6:00 in the morning. At the launch site, you watch the crew inflate the balloon as the sky lightens. The flight lasts roughly an hour, and the pilot steers by catching different wind layers, so the route is never exactly the same. After a soft landing, the team serves a bush breakfast. Most guests are back at camp by late morning, in time for brunch or a rest.
What it costs
A 2027 price comparison puts a Masai Mara sunrise balloon flight at about US$420 to 635 per person, with many operators in the US$450 to 550 range. Another operator lists US$440 per adult and US$330 per child under 11, for both the Mara and Amboseli. Prices differ with the operator, the season and what is included.
| ItemReported price per person (US$) | |
| Balloon flight and bush breakfast | About 420 to 635 |
| Child rate where offered | About 330 (one operator, under 11) |
Some operators include reserve entry fees for the day, while others charge them separately. Check this in your quote, since the park fee in the Mara is US$100 per day in January to June and US$200 per day in July to December for non-resident adults in 2026.
What is usually included
- Pre-dawn transfer from your camp or lodge
- The balloon flight of around one hour
- Champagne bush breakfast
- A flight certificate
- Entry fees, depending on the operator
Best time for a balloon flight in the Mara
Flights operate all year, subject to the weather. The dry season from July to October is popular because the migration herds are in the Mara and the visibility is excellent. January and February are also good, with resident game and fewer people. Heavy rain and strong wind can lead to cancellations, so keep a spare morning if you can.
What you can see from the air
From a balloon you can see the scale of the plains, the Mara River winding below, hippo pools, and herds of wildebeest, zebra, elephant and buffalo. Predators may be visible, but sightings are never promised. The silence lets you hear the wildlife below.
Is it worth it?
Most guests rate it among the highlights of their trip. It suits couples, honeymooners and photographers, and it is a good choice if you have booked a longer stay and want something special. It does not replace a game drive, since the balloon cannot follow animals. If you are on a tight budget, spend the money on additional nights.
Tips for a good flight
- Book ahead, because balloons fill early in July to October.
- Do it early in your stay, so a cancellation can be rebooked.
- Dress in layers, since the dawn is cold.
- Bring a wide-angle lens and a charged battery.
- Eat a light breakfast before the flight, and rely on the bush breakfast afterwards.
- Listen to the pilot's briefing on landing position.
Safety and who can fly
Operators set minimum ages and may restrict guests with limited mobility or who are pregnant. Some operators do not allow very young children. Landings can be bumpy, and you must be able to climb in and out of the basket. Ask us about the rules for your group before you book.
