HOT AIR BALLOON IN SERENGETI
Hot Air Balloon Safari in the Serengeti
By Yulle Adventure
Floating over the Serengeti plains at sunrise is one of the most memorable things you can do in Tanzania. A balloon safari gives you a quiet, wide view of the landscape and the herds below, followed by a bush breakfast. This guide explains how it works, what it costs and how to plan one.
What a Serengeti balloon safari is like
You are woken before dawn, driven to the launch site and watch the balloon being inflated while the sky lightens. The flight lasts about an hour and drifts silently over the plains, rivers and woodland, so you can see elephants, giraffes, zebras and wildebeest from above. After landing, most operators serve a champagne bush breakfast at a table in the open savanna.
What it costs
Recent 2027 pricing guides put a shared Serengeti balloon flight at about US$550 to 690 per person, with some listings around US$599 to 690. Prices vary by operator, season and what is included after the flight. Some safari packages bundle a balloon ride into a short itinerary at a higher total price. Treat these figures as a guide, since rates change.
| ItemReported price per person (US$) | |
| Shared Serengeti balloon flight | About 550 to 690 |
| Four-day safari package with a balloon flight | About 1,800 to 2,800 |
What is usually included
- Pre-dawn pickup from your camp or lodge
- Roughly one hour of flight time
- Champagne bush breakfast
- A flight certificate
- Park fees for the balloon flight, depending on the operator
Check what is excluded, because transfers, tips and the park or conservation fees can be separate.
Where flights operate
Balloon flights operate only from designated launch areas, and they are usually based in specific parts of the park, such as the central Seronera area or the Ndutu area during the calving season. Your camp must be within reach of the launch site, so choose your accommodation with this in mind.
Best time for a Serengeti balloon flight
Flights run all year when the weather allows, but the best experience depends on the month. In the dry season, from June to October, visibility is excellent and animals gather near water. During calving season in January to March, balloons in the southern plains can show huge herds below. Balloon launches depend on wind, so no flight is guaranteed, and operators will cancel for safety.
Is it worth it?
Most guests find it the highlight of their trip, particularly for photographers and honeymooners. If you are on a tight budget, a good game drive may offer better value. If you have the budget and love the idea of the view, it is a rare and peaceful experience.
Tips for a good flight
- Book before you arrive, because spaces are limited and fill early in peak season.
- Plan your flight for a day when you have no long transfer afterwards.
- Wear layers, since it is cold before sunrise and warm after.
- Bring a camera with a wide lens and spare batteries.
- Keep a flexible date, in case the weather forces a cancellation.
- Follow the pilot's instructions on landing.
Safety and restrictions
Operators set age and weight limits and are strict on safety briefings. Some operators do not allow very young children, and pregnant guests are often advised against flying. Ask us about the rules for your group.
Frequently asked questions
How long does the whole experience take? Around four hours from pickup to return to camp.
Can I see the migration from a balloon? Yes, when the herds are in the launch area. The calving season in the south and the dry-season herds in the central and north are the best chances.
What if the flight is cancelled? Policies differ, but most operators refund or rebook if the weather prevents a flight.
Is it better than a game drive? It is different. A balloon gives a wide view but you cannot follow animals or stop for sightings.
