1 Day Hike at Mt Longonot

Overview.
Mount Longonot is a dormant stratovolcano located in Kenya's Great Rift Valley, about 60 km from Nairobi. It last erupted in the 1860s and features a prominent crater that is home to diverse wildlife, including giraffes, zebras, and various bird species. The name "Longonot" derives from the Maasai term meaning "mountain of many spurs" due to its rugged terrain. Mount Longonot is protected as part of Mount Longonot National Park, which covers an area of about 52 square kilometers. The park's primary attraction is the volcanic crater, which is easily accessible via hiking trails.
Itinerary
0700 Hours: Pick up from your accommodation in Nairobi. Depart for Mount Longonot, drive through the lush green Kikuyu highlands to the eastern escarpment of the Great Rift Valley. Make a brief stop to take in the stunning views.
0800 Hours: Arrive at Mount Longonot National Park. Complete registration and pay entrance fees.

0830 Hours: Receive a briefing from your guide about safety measures, trail difficulty, and points of interest along the trail. Begin the hike to the crater rim. The trail is 3.1 km long and gains 630 m in elevation, taking 1.5 to 2 hours. The hike requires a moderate fitness level due to the steep inclines and rough terrain. The steep trail may require a walking stick.
1000 Hours: Reach the crater rim at an elevation of 2,776 Metres. Take in the panoramic views of Lake Naivasha and the surrounding landscape.
1200 Hours: Optional: Circumnavigate the crater rim (7.2 km, about 2-3 hours) for additional scenic views. Enjoy a packed picnic lunch at the crater rim or a designated resting spot.
1400 Hours: Begin descent back to the park gate taking approximately 1.5 hours.
1530 Hours: Depart Mount Longonot. Optionally, visit Lake Naivasha for a boat ride or walking safari at Crescent Island.
1700 Hours: Return to Nairobi, concluding the day trip.
Important Notes
What to Bring: Good hiking boots, walking stick, water, snacks, sunscreen, camera, warm layers that can be removed during the hike and a rucksack to carry supplies.
